There’s running with your dog, and then there’s Canicross.
The difference might look small from the outside — a runner, a dog and a trail — but once you experience a dog leaning into their harness, finding their rhythm and pulling you forward, you realise Canicross is something quite different.
It’s a sport built around connection, movement, communication and teamwork.
And when the right gear is part of that equation, you and your dog can concentrate on what you came out to do: move, explore and have an adventure together.
So, what exactly is canicross?
Canicross is a form of cross-country running where a dog runs ahead of their human and provides a controlled pulling action.
Rather than holding a traditional lead in your hand, you are connected through a purpose-designed system:
Dog → Canicross harness → Bungee line → Running belt → Human
That connection allows your dog to run in front while you run behind, creating a shared rhythm between the two of you.
It sounds simple. But once your dog decides they're an Olympic athlete because they spotted a bird 200 metres away, you'll quickly discover there is definitely a technique to it!
Canicross is about learning to work with your dog's movement rather than simply trying to control it.
Your dog isn't just along for the run
This is one of the things we love most about Canicross.
Your dog isn't a passenger. They're part of the team.
They learn commands. They learn pace. They learn direction. They learn to focus on the trail and on you. And you learn to understand them too.
You start noticing the subtle changes in their pace, body language and energy. You learn when to encourage them, when to slow down and when they're telling you that they've had enough.
Over time, the two of you develop something that can't really be measured by a stopwatch:
a rhythm that belongs to you and your dog.
That's the magic of Canicross.
Why can't I just use my normal dog harness?
You can attach a lead to almost anything.
But that doesn't mean it's designed for running and pulling.
A conventional walking harness is generally designed for controlling a dog during everyday activities. Canicross creates a very different set of requirements because your dog is moving forward and applying pulling force while running.
That means the equipment needs to work with the movement of the dog, rather than simply restraining it.
And this is where purpose-designed Canicross gear becomes important.
The three parts of a canicross setup
A Canicross system isn't just a collection of random pieces of dog gear.
The harness, bungee line and running belt are designed to work together.
1. The harness — where it all starts
The harness is the part your dog wears, and arguably the most important part of the system.
A pull-specific harness is designed around the way a dog moves when they're running forward and pulling.
But here's something we believe strongly at CaniXSA:
There is no such thing as one harness that fits every dog simply because they're the same weight or breed.
Dogs come in different shapes and proportions.
Long backs. Deep chests. Narrow chests. Broad shoulders. Different neck sizes.
That's why measuring and fitting matter.
The harness needs to sit correctly on your dog and allow them to move naturally.
A great-looking harness that doesn't fit your dog properly isn't great gear.
It's just a great-looking harness.
2. The bungee line — your connection
The bungee line connects your dog's harness to your running belt.
Why bungee?
Because running isn't perfectly linear.
Your dog accelerates. You slow down. They surge forward. You catch up. They change pace.
A suitable bungee connection provides some elasticity within the system, helping make those changes in movement more fluid than a completely static connection.
The goal is a connection that allows dog and human to move together, rather than constantly jolting against each other.
3. The running belt — your half of the system
If your dog gets a purpose-designed harness, you deserve purpose-designed equipment too.
A running belt allows you to run hands-free while maintaining your connection with your dog.
It should sit comfortably and securely around your body, pulling from the hips to support your lower back and prevent injury. While being appropriate for the pulling forces generated during your run.
And importantly, it should allow you to run and move with ease.
Because your belt isn't an accessory. It's part of the performance system.
The right gear isn't about looking like a pro
Let's be honest.
When you start Canicross, it's easy to get distracted by the gear.
The colours.
The designs.
The matching sets.
The Instagram photos.
But underneath all of that, good Canicross equipment has a much more important job.
It needs to function.
It needs to move with you.
It needs to be comfortable.
It needs to be durable.
It needs to be appropriately constructed for the forces involved.
And most importantly, it needs to work for the dog wearing it.
At CaniXSA, this is where our thinking starts.
Our beautiful African inspired dog doesn’t just look like performance gear, it has been purposefully engineered for performance. The gorgeous designs are a bonus!
Fit is not a detail. Fit is the starting point.
You can have beautifully constructed equipment, but if it doesn't fit correctly, you're not getting the best from the system.
That's why we encourage every canicrosser — whether you're completely new to the sport or already chasing PBs — to pay attention to fit.
Look at where the harness sits.
Check that your dog can move freely.
Check the neck and shoulder area.
Look at the position of the harness when your dog is standing and especially when they're pulling.
And don't assume that because a particular size worked for one dog, the same size will work for another.
Your dog is individual. Their gear should be treated that way too.
Canicross isn't only for fast runners
Here's another thing we'd like to clear up.
You don't have to be an elite athlete to enjoy Canicross.
You don't even have to be a particularly good runner.
You just need a dog who is physically healthy and suited to the activity, the right equipment, and a willingness to get outside and learn together.
Your first run might be chaotic.
You might run for 30 seconds and walk for five minutes.
Your dog might zigzag.
You might discover that your dog has significantly more cardio than you do.
That's all part of the sport!
Everyone starts somewhere.
The PBs can come later.
Built for adventure
At CaniXSA, we believe getting outdoors shouldn't require complicated gear or a professional athlete's budget.
We started CaniXSA with a simple idea:
Create technically engineered, adventure-ready equipment for dogs and humans who want to get out there and move.
Our gear is proudly South African and locally produced, because we believe there's something pretty special about building quality products here at home, while supporting local manufacturing and creating opportunities for women along the way.
From your first kilometre to your next personal best, we're here for the muddy paws, dusty trails, early mornings and questionable weather decisions.
Because Canicross isn't really about having the perfect run.
It's about having another adventure with your dog.
Ready to find your rhythm?
Start with the basics.
Measure your dog.
Find the right fit.
Get the right connection.
Start slowly.
Learn together.
Then see where the trail takes you.
You might discover a new sport.
You might discover a new community.
You might discover that your dog is considerably fitter than you.
Or you might simply discover that there's nothing quite like watching your dog run ahead, ears back, tail wagging, knowing that you're both heading in the same direction.
That's Canicross.
Two athletes.
One connection.
One trail.
CaniXSA — technically engineered for performance. Adventure-ready for wherever the trail takes you.
